Introducing NoPalm Ingredients: Turning Waste Streams into Sustainable Oils and Fats in ICO₂NIC

NoPalm Ingredients is a Dutch start-up developing sustainable oils and fats that can fully replace conventional palm and other plant-based oils in food, feed, home and personal care, and cosmetic applications. Using oil-producing yeasts cultivated on AgriFood waste streams, the company is creating circular alternatives with a significantly lower environmental footprint. Founded in 2021, NoPalm Ingredients is currently scaling up towards its first 50,000+-litre demonstration facility.

In ICO₂NIC, NoPalm Ingredients is investigating how formic acid can support more sustainable microbial oil production. The team will establish formic acid as a co-substrate alongside AgriFood waste streams for the cultivation of oleaginous yeasts, demonstrating its direct incorporation into the oils produced and contributing to a lower carbon footprint. In parallel, formic acid will be evaluated as a preservative for AgriFood waste streams, helping extend storage times and limit the growth of contaminating microorganisms before fermentation.

Through its expertise in industrial biotechnology and circular feedstock valorisation, NoPalm Ingredients is helping ICO₂NIC demonstrate how captured carbon can be transformed into valuable, sustainable products.
